DSS operate from a global platform in 25 U.S. cities and 159 foreign countries, yet, very few people have heard of us. Diplomatic Security Service, (DSS) Special Agent Samantha Morgan, a former army soldier, is a tough agent highly skilled at her job. She heads the field office in Los Angeles and is responsible for the safety, welfare, and professional development of nearly 100 special agents every two years. Having trained well over 1000 agents in the course of her career thus far. Morgan believes, each individual has a reason for being in law enforcement; a personal tragedy, a passion for a cause, personal angst that runs deep and drives them to a career in law enforcement; truth and justice. Morgan uses this information to hand pick a team that will work around the clock to combat this incomprehensible crime that she says, "should not be part of the 21st century." In recent years, the United States has made human trafficking a priority. An estimated 50,000 women and children are trafficked into the U.S. each year and approx. 18.000 into LA, a crime Morgan says, "will put hate in your heart." Morgan takes the lead in creating the Global Operation Task Force Against Human Trafficking. These DSS agents are the backbone of investigative mission, conducting criminal, counterterrorism, and background investigations. When they are not investigating and apprehending criminals and terrorist, they are the agency identified to accept high threat protection assignments around the globe. The majority of its Special Agents are members of the Foreign Service and federal law enforcement agents at the same time, making them unique.THE SETTINGS: CITY OF LOS ANGELES: is the second largest city in the United States, and with a population of 3.8 million is the largest city in the state of California and the Western United States. Los Angeles is also the seat of Los Angeles County, the most populated and one of the most multicultural counties in the United States. The city's inhabitants are referred to as "Angelenos". During the remaining decades of the 20th century, the city was plagued by increasing gang warfare, drug trades, and police corruption The Port of Los Angeles is located on San Pedro Bay in the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles, approximately 20 miles (30 km) south of downtown. The Port of Los Angeles adjoins the separate Port of Long Beach, employs over 16,000 people, and is the busiest container port in the United States. For public safety, the Port of Los Angeles utilizes the Los Angeles Port Police to fight crime and terrorism. The Port is the busiest port in the United States by container volume, the 8th busiest container port in the world and the 5th busiest internationally when combined with the neighboring Port of Long Beach. Los Angeles is the second largest trading port for trafficked slaves. The Los Angeles region has become a hub for human smugglers and traffickers and federal officials fighting them say their tactics are becoming increasingly violent. Arrests are up as authorities have uncovered more cases in the thriving business, but they acknowledge that this often-unseen crime is rampant in the metropolitan area and that many former drug smugglers are now trafficking in the more lucrative ``human slavery'' market. LOS ANGELES DSS HEADQUARTERS: The office is responsible for Southern California, Arizona,New Mexico, Clark County, Nevada, and Hawaii. STAFF The Los Angeles Field Office has approximately 55 Diplomatic Security special agents and investigators. These special agents and investigators form the backbone of DS' domestic law enforcement mission. PRINCIPLE INVESTIGATIVE FOCUS The principle investigative focus of the Los Angeles Field Office is maintaining the integrity of U.S. passports and visas. To accomplish this mission, the office works with Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies, along with the U.S. Department of States Bureau of Consular Affairs, to investigate any fraudulent use of a U.S. passport or visa. Another crucial aspect of the Los Angeles Field Offices responsibility is conducting personnel security investigations of prospective candidates for employment with the Department of State and other foreign affairs agencies. These background checks occur to comply with U.S. Government and Department of State regulations and procedures. DIGNITARY PROTECTION The Los Angeles Field Office is also responsible for providing protective security to certain high-level foreign dignitaries when they are in the United States. In addition, the office provides protective security coordination for foreign missions, consulates general, and consulates located within their respective geographic areas of responsibility.
